The Design Conference explores the meaning, purpose and future of 'design', including design processes and the use of objects produced. The conference is an inclusive forum that welcomes a breadth of perspectives on design from practitioners, teachers and researchers from many professions and academic disciplines. This inclusive approach provides opportunities for conversations that interrogate ossified assumptions and suggest new possibilities informed by a multiplicity of theoretical, pedagogical and practical concerns.

The conference was inaugurated in 2007 at Imperial College London, South Kensington Campus, London, UK. It was held at the University of Miami, USA in 2008, and at the Technical University Berlin, Germany in 2009. We are pleased to hold this year's conference at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA.

In addition to plenary presentations, the Design Conference includes parallel presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We invite you to respond to the conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters submit their written papers for publication in the refereed 'Design Principles and Practices: An International Journal'. If you are unable to attend the conference in person, virtual registrations are also available, which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 14 January 2010. Future deadlines will be announced on the conference website after this date. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Lepasan Bidang Sarjana Muda Pendidikan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam Perlu Lebih Berdaya Saing

PUTRAJAYA 30 Dis. — Pelantikan lulusan Sarjana Muda Pendidikan daripada Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA) sebagai guru bergantung kepada pengkhususan yang dipilih serta kekosongan jawatan, kata Timbalan Menteri Pelajaran Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.

Beliau berkata tidak semua graduan bidang itu dapat diterima kerana terdapat juga lepasan daripada institusi pendidikan guru yang telah diberikan latihan mengikut keperluan semasa.

"Masalah sekarang ialah graduan lepasan pendidikan IPTA melebihi penawaran.

Kita kenalah tengok pengkhususan dan opsyen yang dipilih oleh graduan IPTA itu, mungkin bidang yang dipilih graduan itu sudah mencukupi buat masa ini,” katanya kepada pemberita di sini hari ini ketika diminta mengulas mengenai rungutan lepasan IPTA dalam bidang pendidikan bahawa mereka sukar mendapat pekerjaan sebagai guru.

Mohd Puad berkata pengadu boleh mengemukakan aduan kepada kementerian yang akan membantu mencari jalan penyelesaian.

Terdahulu beliau merasmikan Hari Kualiti dan menyampaikan Anugerah Kualiti peringkat Kementerian Pelajaran. Pada majlis itu Bahagian Buku Teks Kementerian Pelajaran menerima Anugerah Kualiti Menteri Pelajaran, Kumpulan Meningkat Mutu Kerja Core Jabatan Pelajaran Perak memenangi Anugerah Kualiti Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Pelajaran manakala Anugerah Kualiti Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran dimenangi Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Alor Star, Kedah.

Elemen Kreatif dan Inovasi Dalam Pendidikan Perlu Diambil Perhatian

Najib Tun Razak bergambar bersama sebahagian daripada 371 orang pelajar cemerlang sempena Majlis Anugerah Kecemerlangan UPSR Peringkat Parlimen Pekan di Pekan, semalam.

PEKAN 3 Jan. – Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak mahu elemen kreativiti dan inovasi menjadi teras dalam sistem pendidikan negara bagi melahirkan pelajar yang kreatif dan berinovatif, bermula tahun ini.

Menurut Perdana Menteri, tanpa kedua-dua elemen itu, tahap pemikiran pelajar tidak akan berkembang dan proses pengajaran serta pembelajaran menjadi membosankan terutama kepada mereka yang celik komputer.

‘‘Kita mahu menjadikan Malaysia sebuah negara yang inovatif dalam pelbagai sektor yang bermula daripada proses pendidikan.

‘‘Kita juga mahu melihat semua sektor melambangkan pemikiran yang kreatif dan inovatif,” katanya.

Beliau berkata demikian kepada pemberita selepas menyampaikan sumbangan kepada 321 murid pada majlis anugerah kecemerlangan Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) di Dewan Konvensyen Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah di sini hari ini.

Pada majlis itu, pelajar terbabit yang mendapat 5A dalam UPSR baru-baru ini, menerima sumbangan wang tunai sebanyak RM200 seorang daripada Yayasan Rahah.

Hadir sama, Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran, Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd. Dom.

Najib berkata, pendidikan berteras kreativiti dan inovasi merupakan satu dimensi baru apabila sebelum ini kedua-dua elemen tersebut hanya dipraktikkan di peringkat universiti dan sektor komersial.

Menurut beliau, elemen kreativiti dan inovasi akan menjadikan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran menjadi lebih dinamik dan menarik kepada pelajar.

Ini kerana, jelas beliau, pelajar masa kini semakin terdedah kepada maklumat berikutan perkembangan pesat teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi (ICT).

‘‘Pelajar kini lebih terbuka minda kerana mereka boleh mengakses maklumat tanpa had. Dengan melalui enjin carian ‘Google’ misalnya, mereka boleh mendapat pelbagai maklumat.

‘‘Jika dalam kurikulum tidak ada elemen kreativiti dan inovasi, mereka akan jemu untuk belajar,” jelasnya.

Dalam pada itu, Perdana Menteri menjelaskan, kerajaan mengakui tidak semua murid yang mendapat keputusan cemerlang dalam UPSR akan mendapat tempat di sekolah berasrama penuh (SBP) berikutan tempatnya yang terhad.

Bagaimanapun, jelas beliau, murid terbabit masih mempunyai peluang untuk merayu selain memohon ke Maktab Rendah Sains Nara (MRSM) atau sekolah-sekolah rancangan khas yang berkualiti.

WORLD COUNCIL OF COMPARATIVE EDUCATION SOCIETIES (WCCES)
‘Border’ is a key concept for analyzing the relationship between education and society at all levels. Borders can be national, regional, social or psychic; they can be fixed or shifting. Borders and ‘lines’ can be material (walls), psychological (in peoples’ minds) or metaphorical (the ‘glass ceiling’ for women’s careers). Discussions of borders are part of discussions of space, and of space-time.

‘Space’ can be absolute/concrete/fixed/measurable (rooms, properties, cities, territories) but also relative (flows and exchanges of energy, peoples, money and information in space and time); and relational (linked to how people operate together in or across these spaces). Space is something produced by human activity and in turn conditions it.

Educational space is where ‘difference’ is conceived, reproduced or contested. Our interests would be the linkages between material space (institutional buildings, camps), representations of space (maps and organizational charts as well as metaphors) and spaces of representation, (the lived or experienced space, our feelings and emotions, our senses of security or insecurity). Spaces are made in the living of our lives, and since they are always being made, the possibility remains for them to be made differently. ‘Border-crossers’, physically and psychologically, can defy or challenge structures, and can reclaim power or identity.

The production and control of space and borders is always tied up with questions of power and politics; and also with the production of inequality. Spaces and their uses can be classed, gendered, racialised, and sexualized. The production of space is also therefore linked to the production of identities, to spaces for assembly, or to keeping ‘others’ in their place, materially or symbolically – whether ‘members of the nation-state’, ‘believers’ or ‘the disabled’. Our educational concerns therefore link to inclusion and exclusion.

Rebordering is an aspect of globalization, and it is thought that all themes would have globalization as a backdrop if not a direct concern, and as an opportunity as well as a threat. There would be concerns about responsibility across and within borders (for climate change, arms trade, movements of peoples). But also the concerns are about borders in terms of social divisions, the invisible and visible lines between groups, and how education can challenge those borders which deny freedoms, rights and capabilities. Then, what are the educational spaces for contestation of inequality, for interruption?

We welcome theoretical and/or empirical papers that address the issues from different thematic group perspectives. We encourage papers based on national and/or comparative research and which draw on a range of viewpoints. In particular we look forward to papers from different groups and individuals, NGOs, regional or national institutions, bilateral or multilateral organizations, and financing agencies.

The 12th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education
will be organised by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
in Trondheim, Norway in partnership with the Design Education Special Interest
Group (DESIG) of the Design Society and the Institution of Engineering
Designers (IED). The conference in 2010 will address the relationship between
design education and design research.

This year's conference theme, "When Design Education and Design Research meet
. . . . " aims to provide a platform for participants to explore how
